What is Traffic light eating?
When you're driving a car and come up to a traffic light
✳️green means "go"
🔶yellow mean "slow down"
🔴 red means "stop and think"
The traffic light can also be used to help us make healthier decisions.
✳️Green light foods are:
🔹Grown
🔹Low in calories
🔹High in nutrients
🔹Very colorful
🔹Usually can be eaten raw
Such as all fruits and vegetables
These foods are vital for our bodies. Supplying the nutrition your child needs to grow and keep going! So let them eat as many as they want!
🔶Yellow light foods are:
🔹have more calories than green light foods
🔹usually have more fat or sugar than green light foods
Some examples are:
Pasta, rice, breads, Greek yogurt, chicken/ turkey... Etc.
You can eat these foods everyday, as long as it is in moderation. You don't want to eat too much of these foods.
🔴Red light foods are:
🔹Low in nutrients
🔹High in calories
🔹Foods with artificial sweeteners
🔹Foods with hydrogenated oils or transfers
🔹high in fat
🔹high in sugar
Such as cookies/cakes, fatty meats, red meats, sugary beverages, chips... Etc
Kids and even adults should always stop and think when it comes to red light foods. Consider a different choice or make sure you eat small portions of these foods.
Tips on how to get our little ones to eat more ✳️green light foods:
✅Get them involved! Have your child pick out the veggies and fruits at the grocery store. Remind them that you want to fill your cart with the colors of the rainbow. The more colorful, the healthier.
✅Make food fun. Make veggie art!
✅Start slow. Add some peas to their macaroni or spaghetti to hide the taste.
✅ throw veggies in their eggs
✅grow it! The excitement of knowing they grew something could help encourage them to eat those veggies.
✅add fruit to their salad for a nice sweet taste!
*Remember it's important to eat organic as often as you can. They are better you and your kids. You want to avoid the antibiotics and steroids used in dairy and meats. As well as pesticides/pollutants in fruits and plants.
