Being Fit Vs.Being Fit and Healthy

So this post has been on my mind lately. 2015 is here and everyone wants a quick fix to being fit and losing weight.  

Well I have been where you are, looking for a quick “health fix”. Something that will make me lose weight and build muscle to look like the girls on social media, who we think have it all together. You’d do anything to be as skinny (or muscular) as her/him, right?

To top it off you want to look like that in 20, 24 or even 30 days!! Then in you’re in search of that perfect “fix”.

You start shopping!  What product should I use? It becomes a popularity contest. Which big shot is using this product? (Scrolling through their pics) Well damn they look good it obviously worked for them, if it will do that for me then I am in! So now you’re pumped, thinking hell yeah I’m going to look so good in a month!

Ha-ha yes, I have been there too! I have thought those same things.

As women (more so than men) we get so caught up in the media. The Victoria Secrete shows (models on tv), models on social media or even magazines. Even moms want to look as good as other moms. You question yourself, well wait she had a kid a month before me…why don’t I look like that? Women are their biggest critics, willing to do just about anything to look like those other women.

I have been guilty of being caught up too. Doesn’t mean I don’t want to look good and eventually have a six pack. The question that lies here is, what am I willing to do to get that six pack or lose that weight?

As a Health Coach and knowing the importance of health. I didn’t want to give up my belief in clean eating and nutrition for a quick 30 day change. No, I want to be proud of myself, knowing I have accomplished my goals in a healthy manner.

Well Elyssa if I do this “(Day) fix” and drop 5, 10 even 20 pounds…that’s being healthy, Right?

I’m sorry, but a “quick fix” is not healthy. Yes, you may lose a few pounds and that’s great. Unfortunately, Majority of people will gain that weight back and or more once their done.

And… let’s just say you do end up being the small minority to make it a lifestyle change. You probably see your body changing and transforming in ways you couldn’t imagine. You feel invincible and on top of the world. You got your dream body (or close to it), bottom line is you look “Amazing”!

 

But hold on, let’s stop and think!! First of all let’s look at your role model. Are they eating clean whole foods or processed junk? When they “meal prep” are they prepackaged meals or snacks they have bought at the store or are they clean whole foods? Do their food choices look like they are all out of a factory?

Next, lets go to the products you have now purchased an abundance of. Do you know what’s in it? Did you do your research? Can you pronounce the ingredients on the back? Are they chemicals?

Have your eating habits changed? Or do you think by doing what they are doing will make you healthy? Take a minute and ask yourself, what is really going on inside my body?

 

There is a difference from being Fit and being Healthy.

The importance of nutrition is far greater than a 6 pack. Your internal organs are just as important, if not more important than your appearance on the outside. After all they are what are keeping you alive.

You are all probably wondering well don’t you take supplements?

Yes, I do. But I have done countless hours of research on the products that would most benefit me and align with my beliefs.

So, with that said.

I really encourage you to take time and study about the products you will be using. Are they going to benefit your body not only externally but internally? (Remember supplements are not a replacement for eating healthy) Are you products free of chemicals, non gmo or pesticide free? Will they benefit you in the long run?

I understand that quick fixes are intriguing and exciting because everybody wants them.  So did I! I’m definitely guilty of it especially after having kids…all you want is your body back. I get it ladies!

I just don’t want you to forget that having a great body now means you will be healthy in the long run. Fuel your body with nutrient dense foods. Having good clean eating habits is KEY!  Make sure if you are going to take a supplement that the product is clean, free of junk and words you cannot pronounce. Those chemicals can be more damaging to your body in the future.

 

So here is to living a healthy lifestyle in 2015!

What is GMO?

Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) is when Scientists/Genetic Engineers remove one or more genes from the DNA of a Plant. They combine the DNA with another organism such as bacterium (Bacillus Thuringiensis or BT), Virus, plants or even animal. Then the GMO is transferred back in to the plant obviously altering the DNA causing the plant to tolerate or produce pesticides.

What is GMO in?

Well, it’s in just about everything. 80% of foods we eat on a daily basis have one or more type of GMO!

Here is a list of the Top GMO crops I have found.

·       Alfalfa

·       Corn

·       Canola

·       Cotton

·       Papaya

·       Soy

·       Tomatoes

·       Rice

·       Honey

·       Sugar Beets

·       Zucchini and Yellow Squash

·       Potatoes

·       Flax seed

·       Vegetable oil 

Do not forget that they are also feeding and injecting livestock with GMO.

·       Cattle

·       Dairy products

·       Chicken (also in chicken eggs)

·       Pigs

·       Farmed Fish

Who would have even thought vitamins. Sadly the list goes on…

How does it affect our bodies?

Reports show GMO is linked to Leukemia, Liver Toxicity, Kidney Failure, gut inflammation, increase of allergies, issues with reproductive system and cancerous tumor growth just to name a few.  We are killing ourselves every time we eat these foods and most people have no idea.

Who Supports GMO?

President Obama & our government. 60 Countries around the world have banned GMO, but America has not. America won’t even put a label on GMO products because it will hurt profit. They don’t care about our health, they care about making money. You, yourself have to do something about it.  If we continue to buy gmo products we are supporting them too.

How do we avoid GMO?

·       Look for the NON GMO project verified label

·       Eat organic foods. (I will be doing a post on how to eat organic and healthy on a budget soon.)

·       Eat Fresh Fish

·       Buy locally grown foods- Farmers Markets

·       Plant your own garden

·         Here’s the big one Don’t Eat Out! (meal prep and eat at home so you can avoid eating unhealthy fast foods)

I'm so happy to be where I am today. Good things have been happening for our family. It's like the doors are finally opening for us since we moved. New opportunities, friends and life for us. I'm so excited to take on what life has in store for us. Not every day will be easy, not everyday will be joyful...but that's life. 

I hope to show my kids they can get through anything as long as they keep their heads up and stay strong. To not let other bring them down or tell them they can't do something. 

I want to inspire not only others but my kids. I want to show them that working hard pays off. That living a healthy, active and happy balanced life is so important. They say that "Heath is one of the best gifts you can give to your child." That's what I plan to do, give them health and love tons and tons of love!😘

Advice to those with excuses:  

Change your mindset! It's only you stopping you!! If you don't have the desire, ask yourself why? Are you too tired? Can't afford a gym membership? Work too much? No time? Kids? Embarrassed to go to the gym? What is it? What is your excuse? 

Yes, I said it! Excuse!! We all do it. I have been guilty of it too. You tell yourself you can't get healthy or fit because of these excuses. The question you must ask yourself is, when will it change for me? When will I stop and make a change in my life? 

If you can't afford a gym... Work out at home! If you don't have the time...MAKE TIME! If you have time to be on social media then you have time to workout. If you are too tired go to bed earlier. Work too much? Then get up before work and work out. If you have to wait for the kids to go to bed, then so be it. If you are embarrassed to go to the gym then work out at home or somewhere where you will feel comfortable. 

The bottom line is you can find a way. You just have to want to it bad enough and find a solution to your excuse. Once you find that solution have someone hold you accountable, get a coach, friend or family member. Text/ call each other daily or workout together. No one can make you want to change your life, you have to be willing. Once your willing to make the change you must find it in yourself to make that change happen. Make it your passion because that's your body. Your body is a reflection of you. Make it reflect the best you that you can be!! Read the picture below... Read it over and over until you believe yourself and take that feeling you have and go work out! You can do this.

Quick intro on traffic light eating for kids and parents!

What is Traffic light eating?




When you're driving a car and come up to a traffic light 

✳️green means "go"

🔶yellow mean "slow down"

🔴 red means "stop and think"




The traffic light can also be used to help us make healthier decisions. 




✳️Green light foods are:

🔹Grown 

🔹Low in calories

🔹High in nutrients 

🔹Very colorful 

🔹Usually can be eaten raw

Such as all fruits and vegetables 




These foods are vital for our bodies. Supplying the nutrition your child needs to grow and keep going! So let them eat as many as they want!







🔶Yellow light foods are:

🔹have more calories than green light foods

🔹usually have more fat or sugar than green light foods




Some examples are: 

Pasta, rice, breads, Greek yogurt, chicken/ turkey... Etc.




You can eat these foods everyday, as long as it is in moderation. You don't want to eat too much of these foods. 




🔴Red light foods are:

🔹Low in nutrients 

🔹High in calories

🔹Foods with artificial sweeteners 

🔹Foods with hydrogenated oils or transfers 

🔹high in fat

🔹high in sugar

Such as cookies/cakes, fatty meats, red meats, sugary beverages, chips... Etc




Kids and even adults should always stop and think when it comes to red light foods. Consider a different choice or make sure you eat small portions of these foods. 



Tips on how to get our little ones to eat more ✳️green light foods: 




✅Get them involved! Have your child pick out the veggies and fruits at the grocery store. Remind them that you want to fill your cart with the colors of the rainbow. The more colorful, the healthier.

✅Make food fun. Make veggie art! 

✅Start slow. Add some peas to their macaroni or spaghetti to hide the taste. 

✅ throw veggies in their eggs 

✅grow it! The excitement of knowing they grew something could help encourage them to eat those veggies. 

✅add fruit to their salad for a nice sweet taste! 


*Remember it's important to eat organic as often as you can. They are better you and your kids. You want to avoid the antibiotics and steroids used in dairy and meats. As well as pesticides/pollutants in fruits and plants.

Thai Coconut Curry

Turkey Thai Coconut Curry 


This was such a quick, easy and delicious dinner!! This recipe you can add chicken, turkey or even tofu. 


We had left over turkey from Christmas dinner so I used that! So simple to just reheat left over meat. 

What you need: 

1 tbs of olive oil 

1/2 cup onion (diced) 

1/2 cup orange bell pepper (diced) 

1 cup peas

1 box whole wheat spaghetti 

Chicken, Turkey or Tofu

2 packages of Thai Coconut Curry 

 

Boil water in pot for spaghetti and put the noodles in until done. 


In a large skillet add a tbs of Olive Oil on medium heat. Once warm add 1/2 cup of diced onion (if you are cooking chicken and raw meat after the onions have become Caramelized).  Then add 1/2 cup orange bell pepper (diced). Once bell pepper are somewhat soft add In 1 cup peas. Add Left over meat or tofu. Then pour in 2 packets of Thai Coconut Curry. Cover and  Let simmer until peas are done. 


Once it's all finished pour sauce over over noodles and serve!!

Morning workouts with the fam

Every morning my husband and I pack up our two daughters and take them to the park so we can go workout. I will tell you what, working out with kids is just not the same... So much more work with packing them up, watching them so they don't get hurt and attending to their needs in between sets makes it for an extra long work out. But in the end it of course is all worth it. They are happy they were able to get out and play and well my husband and i are glad we could workout. You have to do what you can and make the best out of your situation. :)

I know this oh so well being that I am a mother of two, trying to run two business from home. I had to finally put an end to my excuses and make time. Exercise is so important not only for your physical health but for your emotional and mental health. It is a great way to remove yourself from the world for a short time and focus on you. Everyone needs "you time" even if it's 15 mins a day.
